American Chemical Society
Support outreach in the Rapid City community by donating to the American Chemical Society! We are asking for donations to buy chemicals for our demonstrations this year. We are planning to see over 1000 students just this spring, and need your help to help curiosity about science explode!
The American Chemical Society at SDSMT has been putting on demonstrations for well over 30 years, and it is not just baking soda and vinegar! We pride ourselves on showing the coolest parts of the chemical and physical world, including contact explosives, smokeless gunpowder and liquid nitrogen cannons!
We pride ourselves on our outreach activities that we do as well as professional development for our members. This semester, on March 18-22, we are sending six students to the 255th ACS National Conference in New Orleans. There, the students will network with graduate schools, present research, and talk with professionals to decide their career path!
Our goal is to raise $1000 to fund our upcoming demonstrations in February and beyond. These are excellent demonstrations as they qualitatively examine and present scientific processes in an engaging way to brew excitement about STEM across the Rapid City and Black Hills area. However, each demonstration show we do costs anywhere from $100-250, if we reach our goal we can add more demos and do even cooler experiments!
This was taken last year at the High Plains Regional Science Fair, where ACS members put on and hour long chemistry show for the young scientists in Rapid City. Our "Magic Show" ended with a liquid nitrogen cannon!
Over the next few weeks, we have demos on February 10 for Grubby the Miner's birthday, Multiple demos in schools during engineering week (February 18-24) , our annual SD Mines Magic show on February 20 in the King Center, and Pierre on March 1st, for the SD Senators and Representatives. We are certainly busy this month and are very excited to be teaching science to everyone!
