Formula HardRocker Racing Competition Fundraiser
Who we are
Formula HardRocker Racing is a team of dedicated engineers that designs, builds, and tests are Formula-style racecar over the course of the school year. The main goal of the team is to take our car to an international competition every year to represent the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
By participating in Formula, we as engineers gain are able to take the material that we learned in the classroom and apply it in a project environment. We also gain a lot of experience in project management and teaming, skills that employers are valuing more in potential applicants. This is why some of our alumni have gone on to work for companies like Toyota, Space X, and Boeing.
On top of the technical skills that we gain from Formula, being on the team brings all of us as people closer together. While we are a team and have the main goal of competition, we are much more than this. The team is very much a family that spends a lot of time together outside of work times, bonding and forming a real relationship. One of the main goals of Formula is to build the team first, because once you have built an A team, the competition results will follow.
This year our competition will be held at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, May 9th-12th. This is a prestigious international competition that has competitors from countries such as Germany and Austria.
The competition is judged by both the performance of the racecar, as well as our performance as engineers and salesmen. The performance of the racecar is judged in four different events: autocross, acceleration, skidpad, and endurance, and the fuel efficiency of the car is also a factor.
There are also three static components of the competition: the sales presentation, design presentation, and cost event. These events challenge us because they make us defend our decisions to professionals in the automotive industry, both design and business, which is a critical skill for an engineer working in industry to have.
Our goal with this campaign is to get $5,000 to cover the costs of competition and put final touches on our car. Right now we still have some material to be ordered for some of the final parts of the car. There are also many costs associated with traveling to competition, such as renting vehicles and lodging.
